Can You Post a Vinted Parcel in a Postbox?

It is tempting. There is a postbox at the end of the road, it is open all hours, and Royal Mail now has parcel postboxes with a wider slot. But for a Vinted Royal Mail order, the answer is no. Do not post it in a postbox.

What Vinted says

Vinted’s help centre is direct about it. If you print the Royal Mail QR code, attach it to your parcel and drop it in a postbox, Royal Mail cannot register the parcel. That means:

  • no tracking, so you have no proof it was sent,
  • the parcel will not be delivered,
  • and no compensation is offered.

Vinted asks sellers to use only the Royal Mail drop-off points shown for the order.

Why it does not work

The QR code from Vinted is not a shipping label. It is a code that tells a Royal Mail drop-off point to print the real label, the one with the address and the tracking barcode. Royal Mail calls this Labels to Go. A postbox has no scanner and no printer, so a parcel posted with just the code on it never gets a label or a tracking scan.

For more on how the code works, see the Royal Mail QR code label explained and what Royal Mail Labels to Go means.

What about parcel postboxes?

Royal Mail parcel postboxes take small parcels, roughly up to 45 × 35 × 16 cm and 2 kg. Royal Mail says they are for prepaid items that already have a printed, barcoded label on them. A Vinted QR code is not that, and Vinted’s guidance covers Royal Mail postboxes in general, so the same rule applies.

Royal Mail has also been adding newer postboxes that can scan barcodes. Even so, follow Vinted’s instructions for your order. At the time of writing, they say not to use postboxes for Royal Mail QR code parcels.

Where to go instead

Vinted lists these Royal Mail drop-off points for sellers:

  • Post Office branches, where staff scan the code and print the label.
  • Royal Mail shops (listed by Vinted as Collect+ parcel shops), which do the same.
  • Royal Mail parcel lockers, which scan the code, print the label free of charge and are usually open 24/7.
  • Customer service points, such as Royal Mail delivery offices.

If the reason you wanted a postbox was to avoid queues or opening hours, a parcel locker is the closest thing to it that actually works.

Already posted one in a postbox?

Contact Vinted support from the order as soon as you can, explain what happened, and include photos of the packed parcel if you took them. Do not wait for tracking to appear, because it will not.

Quick answers

Can I put a Vinted parcel in a normal postbox? Not for a Royal Mail QR code order. Vinted says it will not be registered or delivered.

Can I use a parcel postbox for Vinted? Not with a QR code. Parcel postboxes are for parcels that already have a printed, barcoded label.

What is the 24/7 option then? A Royal Mail parcel locker, if your parcel fits.

Does this apply to InPost and Evri? They use their own lockers and shops, not Royal Mail postboxes. Use the drop-off shown on your order.
